The Cumbria Upland Waters Chemistry project maintains time series data starting in the 1970s (earlier in a few cases) collected by members of staff at the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) and Institute of Freshwater Ecology (IFE) Windermere and currently sampled by staff at CEH Lancaster. Six surface waters are included in the dataset, with measurements of pH, major cations and anions, aluminium, DOC and some other variables. Three of the sites are lakes, three are streams. Devoke Water, Levers Water and Mosedale Beck continue to be monitored; Ennerdale Water, Tarn Head Beck and Bannisdale Beck have not been sampled recently. A map of sample locations is available from the Gateway by searching for 'Cumbria Upland Waters Chemistry - map of sample locations'. CEH research staff use the data to develop understanding of processes governing soil and water chemistry in the uplands, and to find ways to represent them in mathematical models, the principal one of which is the CHemistry of the Upland Model (CHUM).
